WALNUT, CA--Walnut Valley USD celebrated the Class of 2019 retirees during a reception held May 15. Forty-one employees with a total of 1,015 years of service were recognized for outstanding dedication to students during the ceremony. Four longtime staffers share what being in Walnut Valley has meant to them.

Paul McLaughlin, 31 Years of Service

Math Teacher, Walnut High

2004 California Teacher of the Year

“My forty years in education have been spent in several districts and several capacities. It wasn't until I came to Walnut Valley that I truly felt as though I was ‘home.’  I’ve had the privilege of working with extraordinary teachers, students, and administrators. They have helped me become a better teacher and a better man. I have been truly blessed to have been part of the Walnut Valley family!”

Joyce Edwards, 28 Years of Service

Bus Driver, Transportation

“It’s been my life and I’ve loved it - you get connected with students! My special education kids have really touched my heart and it’s hard to say good bye. Bus drivers are the first people our students see in the morning and the last people they see at night. It’s very important to be that positive impact on them. I’ve also loved competing in the school bus rodeos and even went to the state championships twice!”

Greg Rochford, 31 Years of Service

Orchestra Teacher, Chaparral Middle School

“The highlight of my career has been working with thousands of wonderful kids throughout the years. Five of my former students have gone on to become music teachers at the middle school, high school, and university level. In addition, several are enjoying careers as performing musicians, actors, dancers, and artist managers!”

Betsy Hale, 33 Years of Service

2nd Grade Teacher, Collegewood Elementary

“I feel very fortunate to have taught at Collegewood for over three decades. And even though there have been many changes through the years, it has remained a warm and loving environment of dedicated teachers and staff members, supportive parents, and wonderful kids!"
