Placement in Secondary Mathematics Courses
Walnut Valley Unified School District is committed to offering a rigorous sequence of mathematics courses in our secondary schools to prepare students for post-secondary academic and career success. The district has worked closely with math practitioners in designing coursework to best support students.
Our district offers three pathways for students to attain mathematical success in middle school. The Middle School Math Sequence chart (see attached) illustrates the pathways for our mathematics courses based on the recommendations described in the Common Core State Standards and the new California Mathematics Framework. Students are offered the chance to advance from one pathway to another via either a placement test or summer school. All pathways are designed so that students will leave middle school ready for the challenges in the high school curriculum.
Per Board Policy 6152.1, our high school mathematics placement policy provides a consistent protocol for placing students in courses based on multiple objective academic measures. The protocol (see attached) is designed to provide students an opportunity to complete a sequence of mathematics courses recommended for admission into the University of California and California State University systems.
Should you have any questions regarding our mathematics placement policies and pathways, please contact your student’s middle or high school.
